Yuma contains the historical Yuma Territorial Prison, the Yuma Crossing Historic Park, and the great downtown area; Yuma is an Arizona Main Street City. Around Yuma are the Kofa Mountain Range and wildlife refuge, Martinez and Mittry lakes, as well as the Algodones Dunes, which draw tens of thousands of visitors every year. Winter holidays like Christmas and Thanksgiving are very popular. Thousands of people Camp out at the "dunes" each year. Unfortunately, due to careless driving and the use of alcohol while driving, many end up spending their holiday at Yuma Regional Medical Center.There are many hunting and fishing opportunities in Yuma, as uninhabited areas of the county offer a home for a variety of game and fish. Mule Deer and Desert Bighorn Sheep can be found in surrounding areas. Coyotes can be found throughout the area and even in city limits. Dove and quail seasons are popular sporting occasions each autumn, the Mourning dove being a byproduct of the extensive Colorado river-irrigated agriculture lands.
Yuma is the hottest city of its size in the United States, with average July high temperatures of 107 degrees Fahrenheit. (By way of comparison, the corresponding figure for Death Valley is 115 degrees.) Average January highs are around 69 degrees.
The Algodones Dunes are located southeast of the Salton Sea in southern California at the border with Arizona and Baja California del Norte, Mexico. The field is approximately 72 kilometers long by 10 kilometers wide (45 miles by 6 miles) and extends along a northwest-southeast line that correlates to the prevailing northerly and westerly wind directions. The dunefield is a wilderness area, with the only significant human structures being the All-American Canal that cuts across the southern portion from west to east and the Coachella Canal on the eastern border of the dunefield.
The Yuma Territorial Prison was a prison in the Arizona Territory in the United States. It accepted its first inmate on July 1, 1876. For the next 33 years 3,069 prisoners, including 29 women, served sentences there for crimes ranging from murder to polygamy. The prison was under continuous construction with labor provided by the prisoners. In 1909, the last prisoner left the Territorial Prison for the newly constructed prison located in Florence, Arizona. It is now operated as a historical museum by Arizona State Parks as Yuma Territorial Prison State Historic Park.
